Course Description
Standards are a passport for trade (STDF, 2007). The ability to control sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) risk and meet international standards is a key element determining participation of developing countries in the trading system. An effective food control system is essential to provide consumer protection, maintain confidence in food supply and ensure safe domestic and international trade.
This course is aimed to improve compliance with international SPS measures in order to increase market access for agricultural products from developing countries. Improving compliance with food safety and plant health requirements along the food value chain will increase production and export to markets such as the European Union, United Kingdom, United States, Canada and other developed countries.

Audience:
Targeted audience is policymakers/senior government officials, trade researchers, people working for international organisations, NGOs and representatives of the private sector who want to strengthen their understanding of the WTO Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, and/or who are or may be involved in negotiation of policies related to SPS.
Prerequisite:
Internet connection is required as the multimedia lecture and assessment test are run entirely from the course website.
Grading and certificate
A certificate will be issued to participants upon their completion of the multimedia lecture and course evaluation, as well as their success in the assessment test at the end of the course.
